8 steps to a more professional Blogspot blog

Blogger Layout

So you want to start your own blog. One of the first things you'll have to do is decide which blogging application you want to use. There are a ton of options, ranging from the incredibly simple (LiveJournal), to the infinitely customizable (WordPress). But one of the easiest blogging clients around is Google's Blogger.

Blogger is not as easy to customize as WordPress, but Blogger's simplicity also makes the process of setting up a blog a lot less daunting. You can literally start blogging within minutes of signing up for a Blogger account. Google will also host your blog for free, which means you don't need to pay for domain registration or web hosting. WordPress does also offer free hosting, but WordPress doesn't allow free account holders to include advertising. Blogger does. So if you have dreams of quitting your day job, but don't want to pay a few bucks a month for web hosting, Blogger provides a good way to test the waters.

But while Google offers a handful of widgets for customizing your blog, if you really want to make your web site your own, you're going to have to get your hands dirty editing your blog template and adding some HTML and JavaScript code. Fortunately, you don't have to know much about HTML or CSS to implement the tweaks in this guide. As long as you're handy with the copy and paste keys, you should be all set. So let's get started.

Backup your template

Back up your work

Before you start editing your template, it's probably a good idea to save a backup.
  1. Enter Blogger's Layout menu
  2. Select the "Edit HTML" tab
  3. Click the button that says "Download Full Template"
  4. Save this XML file somewhere you won't lose it. You can use it to restore your old template if things go horribly wrong.
While we're talking about backup, now is as good a time as any to mention two services that will let you create regular backups of all the content on your blog. BlogBackupOnline is an online service that will scan your site once a day and save a copy of every blog post and image. Free account holders can save up to 5MB, which should be enough for a few hundred blog posts, while more advanced users can pay for additional storage. If you'd rather download and save your data to your desktop, you might want to check out Blogger Backup, a desktop application for Windows.

Navbar

Eliminate the navigational toolbar

One thing that sets Blogger apart from many other blogging services is the toolbar that is displayed at the top of most blogs hosted on Blogger. Some uses like this toolbar as it includes a site search feature and it lets users find random blogs in StumbleUpon-like fashion by clicking the "Next Blog" button. But it also takes up valuable screen real estate and leaves that nasty taste in your mouth that comes with knowing you don't have complete control over your own blog. So here's a tip from Digital Inspiration that will let you remove it:

  1. Navigate to the Edit HTML tab in the Layout menu.
  2. Enter the following text pretty much anywhere in your template (as long as it's in between other elements) and then click "Save Template":
#navbar-iframe {
height:0px;
visibility:hidden;
display:none;
}

Next time you load your blog, the Navbar should be gone.

Change your label list into a tag cloudlabel cloud

Blogger lets you add labels (the rest of the world calls these tags) to your posts. And you can display a list of labels in your blog sidebar. But if you like to tag liberally, after a few months of blogging, there's a good chance your list of labels will be about a mile long. One solution is to replace your label list with a label cloud.

This hack from phydeaux3 will display a list of frequently used labels on your site. If the list is too long, you can choose only to display labels that are used more than once, twice, or whatever other number floats your boat. Labels that are used more frequently will be displayed with a larger font, while less frequently used labels will take up less space. And of course, any time a visitor clicks on a label, they'll be taken to a page filled with relevant articles.

Add a contact box and About Me page

ContactifyWhile Blogger includes an "About Me" module, when visitors click on it they're taken to your Blogger.com profile page. Wouldn't you rather have more control over your About Me page? Here's a little trick: Just write a blog post describing yourself and set the publication date to yesterday, or better yet, a few years ago. That way it will be buried by newer posts and won't wind up on your front page.

Now you can just add a new HTML box to your sidebar with a link to your new About Me Page. You can create a text-based link by modifying this link: about me.

Using the same method, you can add a contact box using a service like Contactify. Contactify presents you with some HTML that you can paste into a blog post to bring up a contact box. Visitors can send you an email message without every seeing your actual email address, which helps cut down on junk mail.

ads between postsPlace ads and other content between posts

Google makes it extraordinarily easy to place Google AdSense advertisements in between posts. Just go to the Layout menu and click the "Edit" button in the "Blog Posts" box and check the "Show Ads Between Posts" box. But what if you want to show ads from another network or some other content in between posts on yourou main page?

In order to do that, you need to go back into your template and check the "Expand Widget Templates" box. Now find the line that reads " Keep in mind that changing templates will most likely cause issues with your widget layout. So it's best to find a good template before you start designing your blog, or while you're still experimenting with your overall layout.
Custom domain

Register a domain name

Now you know how to make your blog pretty, but there's one more ugly spot you might want to address. The URL bar. Myblog.blogspot.com just never seems quite as professional as myblog.com. Fortunately, you can register a domain name for just a few bucks per year, and Google will continue to handle all of your hosting fees.

Google makes it easy to publish your blog to a custom domain name. Just click the "Settings" tab in the Blogger Dashboard, and then click on "Publishing." Next, click the link that says "Custom Domain," and you can either purchase a domain from GoDaddy or enter the name of a domain you have already registered.

Now you can publish your blog to a custom domain for $10 per year or less. Next time your friends start telling you how much cooler WordPress is, throw that in their face.

Read DOCX Files in Internet Explorer - No Word 2007 Required

Question: How do you quickly read a docx document on some computer that has no Microsoft Office Word 2007 and is neither connected to the Internet (online conversion is therefore ruled out).

Solution: No worries, you can make a docx reader out of Internet Explorer or any other text editor (like notepad) - just follow these steps:

Step 1: Change the file extension of your docx file to .zip (hello.docx -> hello.zip)

Step 2: Extract the contents of this zip file locally using Winzip or any other unzip utility.

docx-readerStep 3: Open the “word” folder in the extracted files and you should see a file called document.xml.

Open document.xml inside Internet Explorer and there you have the full text of your docx document.

If there are any images or charts, they’ll be available under a sub-folder called media.

Though you get to read the text without formatting, it’s still a useful technique to know.

Howto: Install Safari on Ubuntu with Flash and Shockwave! (Hulu, Youtube, Shockwave Works!)

Ok ive been browser hunting and seen a lot of hype about Safari browser's speed so I decided to give it a whirl, I managed to get it install with Flash and it works very well with youtube and hulu ! Here is how I got it installed, let me know how it goes if you decide to check it out!

By the way im impressed with the speed, its as fast as firefox, if not faster! (unforunately its not open-source :(

First lets install Microshit's Core Fonts and wine within the Terminal Applications->Accessories->Terminal
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts wine

Second Make sure wine is set to use the windows version Xp, just click Applications/Wine/Configure Wine
or type "winecfg" in the terminal

Third lets copy Microshits Core Fonts to the wine font directory!
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial*.ttf ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Times_New_Roman*.ttf ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
Make sure wine is set to use the windows version Xp, just click Applications/Wine/Configure Wine
or type "winecfg" in the terminal
Lets download my backup of Safari or download here
wget http://ubuntu-debs.googlecode.com/files/SafariSetup.exe
wine SafariSetup.exe
Uncheck ”Install Bonjour for Windows” and “Automatically update Safari and other Apple Software.” after accepting the terms then click install!

Ok now that Safari is Sucessfully installed in Ubuntu lets install flash for safari!
wget http://ubuntu-debs.googlecode.com/files/install_flash_player.exe
wine install_flash_player.exe

Now Safari is Installed with the correct fonts and has flash, so lets execute Safari From Applications->Wine->Programs->Safari

Install Shockwave:
You gotta download and install shockwave slim or full from the adobe site http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ then:
You need to copy the files located in the adobe shockwave dir to the Safari plugin dir
ie:
cp -R ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/Adobe/Director/* ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/Safari/Plugins

Then Check Safari's Installed Plug-ins under the Help menu to see which plug-ins Safari is able to find, it should be there!

Sou advogada e conheço a lei.

Cumprimentos,
Nuno Santos

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” beta

Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” has just entered the beta phase of development - and that means another 650+MB download and some good hands-on time with my favorite Linux distro!

I first took a look at Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, back in February when it was in the Alpha 4 stage. While that release was functional, it was also a bit unfinished and a little rough in places. This beta release in comparison is a lot more polished and refined. There are still a small number of known bugs that need dealing with, but overall “Hardy Heron” is racing towards the finish line.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

So, what’s new/changed in Ubuntu 8.04?

Making it easier for Windows users to experience Ubuntu

For non-Linux users out there, the most significant changes present in Ubuntu 8.04 will be those related to making it easier to take Ubuntu for a test spin without hosing an existing Windows installation.

The first change that the Ubuntu dev team have made in the hopes that it will encourage Windows users to become Ubuntu users is the addition of Wubi. Using Wubi users can install and later uninstall Ubuntu through Windows as though it’s a Windows application in its own right. No partitions or changes to the bootloader are required to play with Ubuntu.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

The next change aimed at converting Windows users is the umenu launcher. This works in conjunction with Wubi and allows the user to decide how to install Ubuntu. The advantage that umenu offers is that it works independent of whether the user has set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device, thus making the first rung onto the ladder of being an Ubuntu user even lower.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

GNOME 2.22 and Nautilus

Hardy Heron beta incorporates GNOME 2.22 which brings with it a whole raft of new features, changes, fixes and improvements (I’ll cover some of these later). One of the most significant changes is the new Nautilus file manager that uses the GVFS virtual file system.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Firefox 3.0 Beta 4

Firefox 2.0 has been replaced by Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 as the default browser in Ubuntu. This updated version of Firefox integrates better with the rest of the Ubuntu 8.04 UI.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Brasero

CD and DVD burning just got a lot easier with Brasero. While this application is nowhere near as versatile (or dizzyingly complex) as a disc burning suite such as Nero, I like Brasero because it’s wonderfully quick and easy to use packed with all the useful features I need.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

World Clock applet

Technically the World Clock applet is a GNOME 2.22 improvement but I included it here are a significant Ubuntu change. It supports multiple time/weather display and is easily customizable.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Transmission BitTorrent

Transmission has become the default BitTorrent client, replacing the GNOME BitTorrent download utility. It’s small, fast and easy to use. Can’t ask for much more!

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Vinagre VNC client

Another Ubuntu application that been replaced is xvnc4viewer. In its place is Vinagre. This allows the user to work with multiple systems from the one desktop. Not only will this allow users to remote desktop into other Ubuntu systems but it will also allow users to connect to Windows XP and Windows Vista systems where remote desktop has been enabled.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

System Monitor

I’ll admit to being very impressed by the System Monitor utility in Ubuntu.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

PolicyKit/Authorizations

PolicyKit is a security/privilege feature that allows an administrator to unlock certain features to allow their use by a normal user.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Also new is the Authorizations panel. This allows an administrator to have total control over what system functions each user is able to access.

First look at Ubuntu 8.04 ‘Hardy Heron’ beta

Other changes

Some other Ubuntu 8.04 changes worth noting include:

  • The upgraded kernel (now 2.6.24-12.13), which brings with it power management for 64-bit users, kernel-based virtualization and the “Completely Fair Scheduler” process.
  • The PulseAudio sound server that allows advanced audio operations to be carried out on the sound data as it is transferred between the application and the sound hardware.
  • Active Directory support.
  • The inclusion of ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) host-based firewall.

Final thoughts

I like Ubuntu. With each incarnation I’m seeing improvements and betterments that make the OS better, more robust, more user friendly and more fully-featured. In fact, Ubuntu 8.04 is the first Linux distro that I’ve come across that I would consider loading onto my notebook to replace Windows. Throughout my testing Ubuntu 8.04 beta has been reliable and performed flawlessly.

Bottom line, Hardy Heron is, for me at least, the best Linux distro ever.

The final release of Ubuntu 8.04 has been scheduled for release in April.
